CRAIG MARCUS

Experience:

Craig Brian Marcus, Lawyer at Marcus, Hardee, Piñol & Davies LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in trial law.

Mr. Marcus has more than 55 years of professional legal experience as an active attorney at one of Idaho’s oldest law firms, now named Marcus, Hardee, Piñol & Davies LLP, in Boise, Idaho. He was admitted to practice law in 1963 by both the Idaho State Bar and the United States District Court for the District of Idaho. In preparation to become an attorney, he was a student at Boise Junior College, now Boise State University; the University of Pennsylvania from 1958 to 1959; the Universidad de las Americas, which was formerly Mexico City College, from 1959 to 1960; and the University of Idaho, where he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1963.

For Mr. Marcus, his career path is deeply rooted in familial ties predating the 1800s. They include an ancestor who received the Medal of Honor in 1868, and his great-grandfather, who farmed and ranched in the area before Idaho became a state. He was inspired to pursue a legal career by his father, Claude Virgil Marcus, a renowned trial attorney who enjoyed a prolific career in Idaho for 70 years. When Mr. Marcus joined his father’s practice in 1963, he was promptly immersed in diverse litigation for the firm’s many clients such as El Paso Natural Gas Company and Allstate Insurance Company, for whom he would eventually handle hundreds of cases trying most of them to jury verdict. He has litigated hundreds of jury and non-jury cases to judgment in most of the courtrooms in Idaho with the same remarkable success as his father, counting losses in single digits. His most recent cases, jury and non-jury, were finalized in 2019.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Mr. Marcus served as an officer in the Fourth Juridical District Bar Association and on the bar association’s Peer Review Committee and the committee establishing trial rules. When he began his career in 1963, Idaho was a divorce mecca and, using his extensive experience and knowledge from having litigated many divorce cases, in 2018 Mr. Marcus authored “Divorce in Idaho,” detailing the legal process in Idaho for both lay and professional readers. The endorsement for the book from a retired Idaho Supreme Court justice states that Mr. Marcus “is an excellent attorney, a master of his profession.” A 45-year veteran trial attorney also endorsed the book, writing “Craig Marcus is one of the most experienced, successful lawyers in Idaho.”

While attending college, Mr. Marcus fought range fires for the Bureau of Land Management and considers surviving some of those experiences as among his major accomplishments. Between 1964 and 1969, he was a director and coordinator for several United States congressional and senatorial candidates. In 1984 and 1990, he was chairman of successful judicial campaigns for the Idaho Court of Appeals.  He has also contributed his skills and expertise to myriad civic engagements, including as the Ada County Director for Representative Congressional Campaigns

Mr. Marcus is an active member of his community and has devoted himself to numerous civic pursuits throughout his life and career. He gives credit to Christ for his success and believes the best advice he can give is to understand the significance of Abraham Lincoln’s statement that the Bible is God’s best gift to us and “contains all the good our Savior gave the world.”

During his leisure time, Mr. Marcus enjoys what he calls the Idaho way of life—hunting, fishing, skiing and other outdoor activities. He and his wife, Lynne Merryweather Marcus, are proud parents of three children: Shawn, Brian and Trent; and six grandchildren. They attend Cole Community Church in Boise. Mr. Marcus has been recognized for his contributions to the legal community with a 50 Year Service to the Legal Profession award from the Idaho State Bar in 2013. As further testament to his success, excellence and stature, Mr. Marcus has been selected for inclusion in the 25th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the West, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in American and Who’s Who in American Law. Marquis Who’s Who has also honored Mr. Marcus with inclusion to its Top Professional Lawyers listing, an honor that less than one percent of members receive.

Mr. Marcus is an AV-Preeminent ranked lawyer through Martindale-Hubbell, and has been given its highest ranking for over four decades, an accolade that speaks to the nature of his work as viewed through the lens of his peers.  This rating signifies that Mr. Marcus’ peers rank him at the highest level of professional excellence for his legal knowledge, communication skills, and ethical standards. Marquis has honored him with its ‘Best Of’ award in his location and specialty, signifying his leadership in his field.  Also, The Washington D.C. based National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys designated Mr. Marcus “Best of the Best” and awarded him its highest honor naming him one of the top 10 Personal Injury Attorneys in the State of Idaho in recognition of his record of litigation success, hard work, dedication representing his clients, expertise and performance as a master of his craft for over 57 years.
